Arizona cops are now required to check immigration status of a traffic violation suspect if there’s ‘reasonable suspicion’
The Arizona State Bill SB1070 directs cops to determine whether people are in the country legally.
The bill was long sought by opponents, including Minutemen, of illegal immigration. Immigrant rights groups say it amounts to a police state.
The bill passed Tuesday 35 to 21 in the Arizona state House of Representatives.
Foes and supporters agree is the toughest measure in the country against illegal immigrants, says a report.
But police were deeply divided on the matter, with police unions backing it but the state police chief’s association opposing the bill, contending it could erode trust with immigrants who could be potential witnesses, reported Los Angeles Times.
