Andhra Pradesh governor N D Tiwari has stepped down under pressure from the central government, maintaining that he was a victim of a frame-up in the sex-tape scandal. The dramatic development came a day after the 86-year-old veteran congressman’s pictures in a sex romp were flashed in the media.
The center asked Mr. Tiwari to vacate Andhra Raj Bhavan after a high-level meeting in which it was held that pictures purportedly showing the Andhra governor in the “intimate” company of three women had rendered his continuation untenable.
While resigning, Tiwari cited “health grounds” as the reason for putting in his papers to the President.
Congress welcomed the resignation.
The media in Hyderabad had flashed purported pictures of the governor in a compromising position with three women, which created a furor. While Raj Bhavan denied it and secured a high court injunction against public airing of footage, it had stirred a controversy which Congress could not ignore.
