Google Phone vs iPhone: 7 Features Nexus One Has the iPhone Doesn't

How do the two smartphones Nexus One and iPhone stack up because everyone is asking if the new ‘Google Phone’ will be the ultimate ‘iPhone killer.’ We tried to put Nexus One and iPhone head-to-head to create the ultimate guide and we came up with seven key features the Nexus One has — and the iPhone doesn’t.

Here are the seven features of Google’s Nexus One that iPhone lacks:

WALLET-FRIENDLY PRICE: A Nexus One handset costs slightly less than an iPhone: with contract, the Nexus One is around $179, the iPhone $199 (without, it’s $599 and $529, respectively). CNET points out that when you factor in the cost of a plan, the Nexus One is much cheaper: “Over two years (the length of a service contract), the unlimited voice and data plan plus the cost of the subsidized phone is $3,799 for an iPhone on AT&T, but only $2,579 for a Nexus One on T-Mobile. That means the Nexus One will cost you $610 less a year.”

IT’S UNLOCKED: With the Nexus One, Google is making waves by offering a radical new way for consumers to buy their cell phones: instead of going through wireless carriers, users can buy the Nexus One directly from Google. The phone is unlocked, meaning users aren’t tethered to any one carrier and can use the phone with virtually any wireless provider they please (although Verizon and T-Mobile offer it at a subsidized price, with contract). The iPhone, by contrast, is tethered (at least for the time being) to AT&T.

BONUS BATTERY: The Nexus One not only has a longer battery life than the iPhone (7 hours of talk time versus the iPhone’s 5 hours), but is equipped with a replaceable battery that can be switched out if it fails. The ‘Google Phone’ also comes with a program that can tell you what you’re using with your battery power.

CAMERA QUALITY: The camera on the Nexus One is of slightly higher quality (it has a 5 megapixel camera to the iPhone’s 3 megapixel offering), and comes equipped with a flash so you can snap clear photos day or night.

DICTATION ANYWHERE: Don’t feel like typing? Using the Nexus One, you can dictate your texts, emails, searches, notes, and more using the phone’s transcription feature. The New York Times’ David Pogue says the accuracy is around 90%, and usually much faster than typing. Although iPhones can do the same thing using the Dragon Dictation app, users “have to copy and paste the results into [...] other programs,” Pogue explains.

TYPING TRICKS: The Nexus One’s keyboard is conveniently arranged so that users don’t have to switch screens to enter a period when typing (saves precious seconds when typing URLs and e-mail addresses). As you’re typing, the phone will also offer auto-complete suggestions that you can easily scroll through and select. Guy Kawasaki writes, “Five guesses for the word that I’m typing instead of one. I’ve seen Nexus One display as many as fifteen if you vertically scroll.”

OPEN APP STORE: Apple has received major criticism for the approval process it uses to determine which apps make to its iPhone app store (developers have even been known to quit making Apple apps altogether out of frustration). Google has taken a different, more open route with its app store, the Android Market, and does not require approval for applications. Although iPhone apps currently outnumber Android apps (over 100,000 iPhone vs around 16,000 apps for Android), the Android Market’s more open platform, and the proliferation of Android handsets, has potential to change the app landscape.

The worst thing about the iphone’s attempt to hijack consumers with its completely proprietary software is that it cannot be used like a direct hard drive. you have to go through third party apps or buy the 100 dollars mobile me to connect wirelessly to a computer and upload to mobile me which then syncs with the iphone. Its an attempt to prevent you from easily syncing the way so many of us are completely comfortable doing. That is plugging the storage unit into a computer and downloading directly into it. Everything has to be translated into Applespeak before it can be used. So even though I love my iphone for its apps and its internet surfing capabilities, ultimately its a total let down in business capability by design. Apple could unlock its ability to fully function but they are holding onto control as much as possible. Therefore I will when my contract is up, or I find a better phone, dump apple for the next big thing unless they make it much easier and more seamless to load and unload documents and pictures. Apple has truly become just another Microsoft.

Apple has grown lately using the same corporation idea M$ has. Everybody agrees both companies are very successful and have brilliant products out there. Thing is, when someone else attempts to control my choices I get really annoyed by it. Google so far is doing great things that are revolutionizing the way software is made and making monopolist companies rethink their policies. Maybe when apple starts getting hurt real bad by it, they will rethink their approval process for new apps. Think skype. Apple maneuver disapproving skype app at first and only restricting it to be used from a wifi network is just a stupid block on technology that reminds me of the medieval times when that church burned people who would say the world was round, for example. We have the technology, it is available to be used, but you can’t because apple says so, protecting stupid cellphone companies. Iphone lovers, you have all the right to think nexus one is a copy of ideas or whatever, but that’s called competition. You can love iPhone and call Apple “family” as long as you want. I only say one thing, I’m not giving a single penny of my hard earned money to them. Google gives me google maps, google earth, google chrome, soon google chrome OS, picasa, and really, I haven’t spent 1 penny for it. Nexus One’s Android OS is open source. It is extremely hackable, and gives the freedom people need. Finally the revolution on way cellphone is gonna be thought of is here.

All of these articles are response waste. Read ahead, the way ahead, “Google” and “Apple” will provide updates. Think about it, Apple is one the verge of 64GB storage capacity. Storage is not the end all, but with most updates there are perks attached. Pretty sure Google will do the same, and the processors will sky rocket. As for quality, speed, clarity all will excel with technology.

Write about something that matters. Put a plain spread sheet to give the quick 10sec glance to compare. Remember, in the spring all the comparisons will start again.

One note, it was a matter of time until Apple was challenged. They too, have been getting greedy and more than likely will get taken down a notch or two. All giants do at some point, that is what makes capitalism so great.

    Price: Cheaper is still cheaper.

Unlocked: If you don’t want to be tied to a single provider then this is good. Tell me nearly every iPhone user wouldn’t want this option, even if they never intend to use another carrier.

    Battery: ’nuff said.

Camera: It’s true 5-megapixel does not equal quality camera. The real question is which one takes the better picture. iPhone pictures are not that great so it wouldn’t be a huge feat to better the iPhone’s camera.

Dictation: I beg to differ here. With more and more states banning (rightfully so) texting while driving, dictating text messages will become more popular.

Typing Tricks: eh… Don’t see a Nexus One advantage (or disadvantage) here.

Open App Store: Since Android phones are so new of course there are not as many apps as iPhone has. Seriously. How many apps does one really use anyway? The most useful apps are already available for both iPhone and Android.

My biggest problem with iPhone is the voice network. I had one and turned it back in to AT&T because the voice network is crap. Also the iPhone cripples their handset by not allowing owners full access to their file system. You can’t even use bluetooth to send files to another handset. Even Verizon allows that. Plus Verizon has a better voice infrastructure. I’m waiting for the CDMA version of the Nexus One.

How about you guys TRY the google phone before you start making uneducated comments about it’s inferiority to other products? It’s not just specs that dictate how good a product is, how about:

    Build quality?
How easy it is to use for you personally?
    Price?
    Looks?
    Potential?
    Etc

I am personally in the market for a new phone, and I will be trying both! Then and only then will I start commenting on how good it is compared to the iPhone.

“3mp vs 5mp is irrelevant jargon that is only there to sway the uneducated masses into buying a product for a feature it will never use” – You mean YOU personally wont use it? o.O I use the camera on my phone, it’s no where near the quality as my actual camera, but to be honest my camera is a bit of a chore to carry round all the time :/ And many people feel the same. If the makers of the phones had the same attitude as you then phones would consist of… Calling and texting… that’s it! It’s all about convienience. There wouldn’t be the iPhone for you to compare to and get so protective about.

“as for making decent and reasonable points, i don’t think you’ve done that here”

And you Mr Justin DEFINITELY have not!

    this article is bullshit.

    1) wallet friendly price. in the specific and uncommon example you chose, you are correct. you assumed an unlimited everything plan. i don’t know anyone who needs/wants such a plan. in the minimal plan, the nexus still is cheaper, but by a much slimmer margin.

    2) unlocked. you make a useless point. the iphone is locked to at&t, and some people hate that. the nexus is unlocked, and can be used on at&t and on t-mobile in the states. BUT, if you want anything more than edge speeds (which we know are roughly as fast as smoke signals), then you must use tmobile. If thats not a backdoor lock, i don’t know what is. who wants the latest and greatest $529 phone that can only go online with edge?

    3) battery = you are exactly right there.

    4) camera. the real question about a camera on a phone is “can it replace my point and shoot camera?” can it? no, it has an led flash that helps a little, but not enough to replace a real camera. 3mp vs 5mp is irrelevant jargon that is only there to sway the uneducated masses into buying a product for a feature it will never use.

    5) dictation. no one uses this, who cares.

    6) typing tricks. i quote “users don’t have to switch screens to enter a period when typing (saves precious seconds when typing URLs and e-mail addresses).” with the iPhone, you hit the space bar twice and it gives you a period. if you are making a point about things the iPhone is lacking, you might want to use examples that, you know, talk about something the iPhone is actually lacking.

i’m bored of typing this. i have an iPhone it’s shortcomings annoy the hell out of me. this article is designed to do one thing and one thing alone: make it to the top of google’s news so you can get precious ad views, and it worked. as for making decent and reasonable points, i don’t think you’ve done that here.
