Canadian women’s hockey team beat Team USA 2-0 Thursday night.
People and the media present at the celebration were taken by surprise to see Canada’s 18-year-old superstar Marie-Philip Poulin, drinking alcohol on the ice and smoking the cigar. The legal drinking age in British Columbia is 19. Marie therefore may have broken the Canadian law on under-age alcohol drinking.
Canada’s women hockey players celebrated for more than 70 minutes after the awards ceremony reveling in the arena.
The ice hockey arena was empty but the media and arena staff were present.
IOC spokesman told media that drinking in public was “not what we want to see” from athletes at an Olympic venue, adding that the organization will investigate the actions and will speak with the international hockey federation and Canadian Olympic Committee and ask them to “act accordingly.”
Marie and others who may have broken the law can expect to be suspended, barred and or processed under Canada’s alcohol drinking laws, say some observers.
A spokesman for the Canadian Olympic Committee, told the Associated Press that “We condone celebrations. … We don’t condone actions of irresponsibility.”
