The drastic dip in sex ratio in the country since 2001 and the female foeticide existing in the urban areas is an open truth.
However, what is more astonishing is the fact that even after PC & PNDTC (Pre-conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex selection Act) was implemented in 1994, the male-female ratio has steadily widened apart. The trend still continues.
“Doctors need to take a lead in educating people about sex determination tests . What they say is considered gospel by the common man,” said Art of Living Founder, Sri Sri Ravishankar. He was speaking at the national conference on ‘Doctors for Daughters: Faith in Action against sex selection’ held at the Art of Living ashram in association with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Indian Medical Association (IMA), here on Saturday.
He further said that doctors conducting such ultra sound tests for their benefit have brought bad name to the medical profession. The noble profession needs to retain its respect and adhere to ‘no sex selection’ policy.
Around 70 doctors from different parts of the country participated in the workshop to discuss curbing sex determination tests at hospitals and local clinics. Some of the bitter truths were revealed with Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat and Delhi showing alarming figures of female sex ratio.
Ena Singh, Assistant Representative, UNFPA India and Dr Dharam Prakash, Secretary General, Indian Medical Association (IMA) were present.
