New information has emerged on Flight 253 terror suspect. The terror suspect has been identified as Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, 23, a Nigerian citizen who was born on December 22, 1986. Mutallab has been on the terror watch list but not on the no fly list, as mentioned by congressman Rep Peter King, (R) New York on CNN.

Mutallab, who was detained upon arrival of Flight 253 at Detroit airport, is being treated in a local hospital for serious burns.

The terror suspect was earlier named as Abdul Mudallad. Mudallad’s name popped up on Terror Watch List Database, said Congressman Peter King on CNN today.

Rep King is a ranking GOP member of the House Homeland Security Committee. The Congressman told CNN that the Nigerian suspect had claimed to have links with Al Qaeda. The terror suspect also divulged that the explosive device he had strapped on his body on board Flight 253 was acquired in Yemen with instructions on how to detonate it on board.

A passenger Syed Jafri (Jafry) who was sitting at seat 16G on Flight 253 told CNN that the suspect was sitting on 19A seat, and “he saw a glow, and noticed a smoke smell. Then a young man behind me jumped on him.”

According to tNY Daily News, the passenger ” tried to explode powder taped to his leg with a syringe full of chemicals.”

CNN’s War on Terror Expert Peter Bergen told CNN that Nigeria had one of the least airport security measures and the suspect may not actually be a Nigerian but some one who may have used Nigeria’s Lagos airport to bypass security measures and fly to Amsterdam on way to Detroit. Observers are calling it a grave security breach.

Detroit is the hub of Northwest airlines.

Earlier report said the 23-year-old Nigerian national suspect who was on board the Detroit bound plane Flight 253 from Amsterdam attempted to detonate an explosive or some kind of device on board when he was restrained by the passengers, CNN’s national security contributor told CNN.

The Delta Northwest Flight 253 suspect, who is a Nigerian national claims to have affiliation with some extremist organization, CNN reported in its 6 o’ clock news bulletin today.

Earlier reports said the suspect ignited a fire cracker inside Flight 253. Now it is being reported that the suspect may have detonated some kind of an explosive device.

The terror suspect has been moved to a hospital with injuries as he attempted to light some kind of “a small explosive device” and not a ‘fire cracker’, it is being speculated
