DESPARDES — Weeks after appointing former envoy to US Ali Jehangir Siddiqui, as ‘Ambassador-at-Large’ for investment, Prime Minister Imran Khan has appointed Sahibzada Jahangir spokesman on Trade and Investment for UK and Europe regions.
Prior to his current appointment, Jahangir – known popularly as Chicho bhai, used to head Imran Khan’s International Secretariat on Foreign Trade, Investment and Development from Europe in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He is also head of PTI UK and Europe chapters.
Jahangir is among Imran Khan’s oldest friends including Naeem-ul-Haque and few others. He’s the elder brother of Fauzia Kasuri, a founding member of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI). ” My brother introduced me to Imran Khan in 1992,” wrote Fauzia on Facebook in 2016.
She’s devoting all time to social work now.
According to The News, it was at Jahangir’s house that Khan’s marriage with Jemima Goldsmith was celebrated soon after their nikkah.
Khan’s close aide is said to have helped raise funds for NAMAL University, Shaukat Khanum Hospital and Khan’s party PTI.
According to the notification issued by PM House in Islamabad, Jahangir’s appointment is on honorary basis– he will work pro bono (not be taking any salary or privileges).
Siddiqui’s notification issued last month said he has been appointed as “Ambassador-at-Large” for foreign investment in an honorary capacity.
Earlier, in October 17, Jahangir, was appointed by PM Khan as his special assistant on foreign investment, but refused to take charge after criticism of his appointment over social media.
Jahangir was accused of alleged financial fraud in London but investigation showed that there were no fraud findings against him in any court.
“I will soon be visiting European capitals to meet diaspora communities and to businesses to inform them about the opportunities that exist in Pakistan,” he said.
