Arrests Galore Building Up In Pakistan On Corruption Charges

“IK is an elephant in China shop. He will beak many cups and dishes before he gets done and shown the door.”

PKONWEB Report — Former premier Nawaz Sharif and former president Asif Ali Zardari are behind bars on corruption charges.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif (younger brother on Nawaz Sharif) and son Hamza Shehbaz stand indicted– also on corruption charges. Hamza is in slammer on 15-day remand– part of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) standard operating procedure to complete its investigation.

On Friday, Zardari’s younger sister Faryal Talpur, was put under house arrest in Islamabad– on corruption charges also.

Also on Friday, the state’s anti-graft watchdog detained Punjab’s serving Forest Minister Sibtain Khan for allegedly illegally awarding contracts to his favorite firms.

More arrests related to white collar crime charges are imminent, sources say. “The State is firm about it.”

But many are grim, specially the political and business community, observers say.

The arrests blitzkrieg comes as Pakistan faces unprecedented fiscal storm as a result of gross mismanagement of foreign loans and expenditures over the last ten years– Nawaz led PML-N and Zardari-led PPP ruled during this period preceded by a military rule by Gen Pervez Musharraf (Oct 1999 – Aug 2008) who created the NAB to rope in the corrupt.

Bilawal sees PM Khan’s ‘Naya Pakistan’ and Musharraf’s military rule are similar.

Bilawal’s father Zardari says, Imran Khan should resign and go home, doubling up on his earlier statement that “either NAB will remain or the economy.”

PM Khan says his mandate is to eliminate corruption come what may.

According to one senior analyst, “IK is an elephant in China shop. He will beak many cups and dishes before he gets done and shown the door.”

“He only needs a little financial support to weather the current storm.”

On Friday, the dollar hit a historical high of Rs157. Some independent observers say, fiscal management sans corruption with additional internal or external financial support could make the difference.
