From Boom to Bust: 3 Graphs of Interest

How things were going for Pakistan during the period 1960 thru 1991 (30 years). And what happened over the next 30 years (1991 thru 2022). 3 graphs below–out of the several published in a recent article in Dawn, give a composite perspective of the past sustainable development trends and the present stagnation:

There was sustained growth of almost six per cent during the period 1961-1991.

During the period 1960-1991, Pakistan was exporting twice as much as India or Bangladesh, relative to the size of the economy.

Failure to save: Pakistan’s poor performance on savings is one of the clearest markers of a long-standing crisis: we have underinvested in our future for nearly two generations now.
